Tech Help with lath/Plaster

HI everyone.

This is my first posting. Ill start with my project. I just bought a home built in 1875. Its a grand home in a historic district. It also needs a lot of work. The first thing I would like to do is repair the plaster and drywall in the home. Most of it has cracks throughout. Im wondering if I need to remove it all or if I can do a Plaster Skim coat on all the walls including the drywall. Im new to this and was not sure where else to turn. Your help would be great.

Thanks
Don

Eh Cylcone!

As for the ? - most was built using horsehair tooo - It kinda needs to be pulled if you cannot put a layer over it to finish - and don't sand it all off - this is a body job done on the inside - [auto body rebuilding is just the same - different products used though]

you gotta big job - took a year on my grandfathers place - after 10 years of no one living there - 30 years ago.

Crackfill and Moosehead - its a beer

cheers - C

You may be able to repair it. The key to repairing the cracks is to repmove all the loose material. When plaster cracks it is definitely separated from the lath. If you try to skim over the loose material the crack will come back.
You might want to take a look here . Look on the left column for "breaktime forum". There are a bunch of builders / remodelers that hang out there. You'll probably get more info than you want!

My late father used to be pretty good at it with Spackle. As I remember, he would just put filling material and Spackle.
