You know that green bean casserole stuff?

Do you think that was ever a real recipe?
Or was it made up by Campbell's and Durkey?
(heehee ie spell tried to make durkey dukey (that word's been used to refer to lawn sausages-- well, I'm keeping this a food type thread )

I'm taking one tonight cause Gramma really likes it, but I just can't dump cans of junk together and stir,
Does anyone have a recipe for mushroom sauce or mushroom gravy that doesn't involve a can of mushroom soup?...
Anyone here have a recipe that is from scratch not Campbell's?
Why do I wait till the last minute?

What color do you want the sauce. If it's white, then Mushroom soup would be easiest. Jack it up with butter and more mushrooms.

Hey Surreal...I seem to recall you having this conuner conundarm connunder...hassle... before...I think you were asking about anything that didn't have those little canned fried onions?

How come you keep getting pegged as "The Green Bean Casserole Lady"? That's just weird, you're a pretty hip cook!

A suggestion? Maybe just make the soggy mess What the hey,Gramma likes it, make her happy and then make a little something else that demonstrates your culinary creativity, and perhaps they'll realize you're a real cook, dangit! and you wont have to deal with green bean casserole anymore!

I would think you could alter this recipe:

Green Beans Supreme

Changes I would make:

Dump the lemon zest, American cheese, and bread crumbs.

Sautee some chopped mushrooms with the onion.

Add a little garlic powder.

And of course don't forget those tasty canned onion rings.

Don't you just relish (a little food lingo there) trying out new recipes on people.

Bill

Well, actually what I plan to do is...
I want to make a nice mushroom sauce (I can't bring myself to do the soup )
Use frozen whole gbeans (hey I'm in Pennsylvania)
And I was going to cheat by trying some frozen onion rings that are baked and made with vidallia onions.
cook beans
add sauce kind of decorative on top like in artsy fartsy man,,,,,
then top with the hot onion rings and serve..

I want a sauce not gravy
I have white and portabella shrooms, some fat free half and half (OK I bought it cause just the name is such an oxymoron)
Onion,
butter.
just wondering if some type of subtle seasonings should be added....
Oh and I will thicken it with flour a bit.

This is for a family gathering where most of they cooking all 100 of them do is kinda microwave .. well you know. This would major home made to them

Huh! Well, that certainly works!

For me, anyway. Hope it passes the Gramma Test!

I'll just leave out the humorous, but possibly inflammatory, dialog about G'ma's reaction to Artsy Fartsy....heh heh heh....

You got that right! But they are finally adjusting to me
I've never met such a bunch of humorless pious people in my life.
But I'm just me.. so sometimes to see my mother in-law just look at me and then bust out laughing (I never heard her laugh till I got over being shy and became me)

GOMER!!! You found a real recipe!!!!! Thanks!!
I probably would leave the bread crumbs on the recipe you found Bill, they would make the top crunchy..

This is the crap people call green bean casserol,,,, Yuck!!
