Who knows what's in Gadhafi's mind? The death of his child seemed to have a tremendous impact. The bombs missed him and got his kid.
Maybe its realizing that "Arab Unity" isn't so unified. Maybe he's just getting older. He's only about 65, which is kinda young for someone who's been ruling for nearly 35 years!

The one thing I always wondered is why he is only a Colonel? Hell he owns a country, you would think he would promote himself to general.

Actually, Qadaffi has no official title in his government. Again, like some other leaders in the region, he brough Libya to a better standard of living. It used to have the absolute lowest standard in the world. Traditionally, they are nomads.
