Title: WRITING IN AN UNWRITTEN LANGUAGE
Subject: American Sign Language 1 (college) 15 weeks Class: SPA 2612 Duration: 120 minutes

Purpose
Glossing, which is nothing more than preparing a written transcript of a signed message, will enable learners with a tool they can use to help them in three specific areas. First, glossing will enable students to note the syntactical and semantic differences between ASL & English grammar structure. Second, having a common terminology and frame of reference will enable the students to discuss the linguistics of ASL productively with their peers and the instructor. Third, comparing their initial glosses with their performance and then with their self-assessment of the performance will enable students to assess their own performance skills in an objective manner.

Re: ASL sentence GLOSS help

Oh well now that nunyadam has explained "glossing" I can more or less answer your question. Never heard of it called glossing. ASL grammer is diffucult to write. Just remember that ASL Grammer is almost exactly backwards of the English Spoken language.

To easlily explain the two major differences in the two languages think of it this way.

Take a trianagle and write it upside down with the point towards the ground. This represents the english spoken language. People tend to talk and then finally give you the point.

Now take the same triangle and place the tip to the sky. This represents the ASL Lanangue. Point is ALWAYS stated first.

There is reason for this there are several signs that can mean more than one thing. So its important to always have subject first. If time is involved time is usally stated first then subject and then you say whatever you want.

Also remember that the true ASL language does not use "To be form of verbs"

so for your two questions you have:

Your subject in here is "not breaking each others heart" Your time frame is christmas.

So to write this in ASL grammer santax would be:

Christmas time, break heart not good time finish.

Yes, i am in ASL level 1.

Well I ended up making "'Cause Christmas ain't the time for breaking each other's heart" a retorical question.

GLOSS: CHRISTMAS HURT FEELINGS GOOD? NO.

Or somthing to that extent. I was doing a christmas song for my ASL semester exam and that was a sentence in the song.

BTW, i got a 90 on the song
