I always buy cell phones with the T9 function, which has an intelligent dictionary that inserts the most probable words for you, so you only have to press: '4,3,5,5,6' to get 'hello'.

I never SMS on my phone, but the Blackberry I get for work has a smart dictionary so you only have to type 'wer' to get we're ... but its got the thumbpads so its MUCH easier to type on.. I can type pretty fast on it these days.
