Controversial NJ Hunt Ends

with 328 Bears Killed!!

QUOTE "Fifty-three bears were killed on Saturday, the last day of a six-day hunt officials organized to control a bear population they said had grown aggressive and threatened public safety."
AND
"McHugh defended the hunt, saying that in the past year bears had broken into 58 homes and made more than 20 other attempts. He said 53 bears had been hit by vehicles and there were nine reported attempts to enter vehicles by bears."

My question is how much of a REAL danger were any of these bears?? Most of the bears killed were female! 209 Females killed/119 Males killed. I do know that New Jersey is very heavily populated and the bears can be a nuisence but there is a difference between "nuisence" and "dangerous" to humans.

I don't have any problem with a bear hunt. But far more New Jersey residents are killed or threatened by SUVs than by bears and we don't go out hunting SUVs, do we?

Hey, maybe that's an idea for the next hunting season!!

The danger is over-rated. However, it is a danger which can be easily dealt with and provide entertainment for big game hunters while filling city treasury. Win win win lose for the bear Actually not all that bad a lose for the bear either strained resources are less so other bears live better.

As for the SUV comment.

More people are killed each year by other types of vehicles. Just SUV's kill more efficiently.

This is extremely poor wildlife management. To note the fact that they had that many bears killed in that short a time shows the need for a more appropriate way to manage the bear population. That is a staggering number of animals as well as hunters in a small amount of area. Comppletely unsafe 'd hate to ahve been in the woods with all those people out there. Had they had a smaller more controlled hunting season in the past the need for such drastic approaches would have been lessened.
