Out of sight, out of mind:

Iraq to Stop Counting Civilian Dead
Quote:
Iraq's Health Ministry has ordered a halt to a count of civilians killed during the war and told its statistics department not to release figures compiled so far, the official who oversaw the count told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The order was relayed by the ministry's director of planning, Dr. Nazar Shabandar, but the U.S.-led Coalition Provisional Authority, which oversees the ministry, also wanted the counting to stop, said Dr. Nagham Mohsen, the head of the ministry's statistics department.

"We have stopped the collection of this information because our minister didn't agree with it," she said, adding: "The CPA doesn't want this to be done."

I disagree with that decision totally. From a historical perspective the casualty count for this war was incredibly low. It would be nice to know within reason how low. Sorting out who caused the deaths would be complicated. Many were killed by the Iraqi army with indiscriminate shooting and ADA during the war, and by the guerilla terrorists after the war.

Also, Saddam's regime killed something like 100 people a day. It would be nice to know how many lives this war saved.

The BBC had a story on the Brit. est. about a month ago.

22,000-25,000 Total
10,000-16,000 civilian

Don't have a link, sorry, but the story was focusing on why the civilian rate was so high. There was some sort of oddity to do with the percision weapons. It didn't have to do with malfunctions, damn I can't remember now. I'll see if I can find it again.

I go for compile for later release. With a side order of who caused them.

Oh yea that is easy. Saddam caused all of them because there would have been no war had he and his sons taken off, or complied.

Sorry guys was a little confused with the numbers. Hey read it on Oct 29th.

20,000-26,000 1991 Gulf War
3,500 civilian

11,000-15,000 (13,000) 2003 Gulf War 3/19/03-4/30/03
4,300 civilian

BBC link

After rereading it IMO the oddity in civilian casualties may be due to the extre fighting in built-up areas. This is why the US wanted to aviod that. Fighting in built-up areas (cities) is very bad for casuslties all the way around.

any industry worth note.

Of course my statement did not reference any weapons.

what ever the reason for going to war the ability to avoid it was simple for saddam. comply and keep power Option until approximately the beginning of 2003, Leave and live 48 hour opportunity, or stay and risk war.

Option Three was selected.
