it's possible, but a long ways off.
I actually remember having a discussion about this in one of my classes last year...theory of automata. There are several things that need to happen first:
First of all, precise computation needs to go. I can't remember the exact term for this type of logic, but basically the only type of logic a computer can do is fact A leads to fact B which leads to fact C, and so on and so forth. This is well and good for numerical number crunching, but it doesn't work as well in many other forms of thinking. The main thing that is missing is heuristics...fact A leads straight to fact F, skipping all others in between. We, as humans, do this all the time. "When will the movie be over?" "oh about 8:30" a current computer cannot do this.
As for becoming self aware i think that is entirely possible as well. In many ways we are nothing more than a complex system, designed to interact. we are simply based on chemistry (mostly) whereas robots are based on physics(electricity). of course one might mention that humans have souls. This could be the key to never achieving true A.I, but then again i'm not sure and no one else is either. What is the soul first of all? and assuming we ever actually find out what the soul is, can it be replicated (assuming an actual thing called a soul exists and is more than just a human conception)? who knows.
The real question here is what do you mean by self aware? and what is true A.I.? these are actually relative questions IMO, not conrete. If a robot is programmed to "feel" a certain way due to a certain stimulus, does it really feel that emotion? if it is programmed to be "self aware", is it really self-aware? for that matter are we truly self aware...and of course you can see where i'm going with this.
Basically "True A.I." and self awareness need to be really defined and understood. personally i think we understand it about as much as we understand the definition of love or other such things.
