About a week ago I heard on the radio that VA had a ban on live Xmas trees in apartments, businesses, churches ... with more than 2 or so families in them.
last week I heard that the ban was not going to be enforced due to international law. Some fire department official said that international law trumped virginia's law. Hmmmm!
The ban was stupid for several reasons.
First off the risk of a tree going up in smoke is (tremendously low for even that dead dry thing you have forgotten to water for the last month. Yes it can start to burn easily but it happens tremendously infrequently.
There are other things out there which should be banned that are many times more dangerous. Approximately 324 house fires were caused by xmas trees in 2002. While smoking was the cause of household fires many 10's of thousands of times annually.
I cant find the stats I heard but just about every reason from candles and cooking to electric irons and fish tanks were responsible for more household fires. Ban doing laundry in your house that is going to burn more houses than every faultily lit tree in the USA.
Typical retarded legislation.
Now on the flip side of this (our fire marshal saying that international law trumps virginial law is rediculous) I could give a ratts red fanny what international community thinks when it comes to our local laws.
Ps follow x-mas tree safety and check you lights, check the trees placement and make sure it is watered good. There is no reason to take more risk on your life. But dont be paranoid.
Sounds like some law makers have waaay too much time on their hands, and maybe too much eggnog under their belts. They need a hobby, like knitting warm cloths for the needy.
