Why are The Beatles the best?

I am only 19...and I have always loved music my whole short life, especially rock and roll. Four years ago I fell in like with The Who...to me they are the best! However, as you would guess, people beg to differ. I always hear The Beatles are the best thing since Jesus (And I think they got slammed on that one too!?!?) Anyways, why? Without saying..."Cause they are!" or "Cause I love their music!" I would seriously like to know why the Beatles are giving the #1 honor? Not being sarcastic at all...I just truly don't know why...can anyone explain to me why they are? Like what did they do no other band did, what did they start doing, what did they do first, etc. Thanks!!

I loved the Beatles when I was younger. Some of their work is dated now. It is impossible to say one group is the best just like it is impossible to say one food is the best. People need variety.

In their time, the Beatles were extremely innovative and experimented with many styles. They were the first to do many things. Their different periods were as different as different groups (e.g. "Meet the Beatles" compared to the "White Album".) Listen to how the guitar speaks the words on "I want you (so bad)" on the "white Album" and you get a sense of creativity.

I just saw Simon and Garfunkel at Madison Sq Garden yesterday and I'm still in awe.

Thanks for the post already but I still...if people don't mind...want some more info. I know The Who the best...and I can say things like...

The were the first band to do a rock opera...
Maybe the first band to use the synth as an instrument (definitely main stream band to do so)...
First heavy metal band...
First punk band...

Things of that nature.

I know you can't say The Beatles are #1 cause there is not one style of music...well I was just going by...o lets say Rolling Stones Mag, VH1, rock and roll critics...all who say Beatles are the #1 rock band...I just still don't see it...and I want people to tell me differently...so persuede me!!!!

The beatles just opened the door for everybody else...there wouldnt be much of a who or stones without the beatles comin over here and opening the door first.....they were great virtouso SONGWRITERS....plus they had charm, charisma etc.

But I do understand when someone doesnt "get" a band.....cuz I absolutely dont and never will understand why anyone cared for Bob Dylan.....I just dont see or hear that at all..lol....I liked hendrix and hendrix loved Dylan, but I think dylan sucked, lol.

JP

Besides, if you say they arent number 1...who ya gonna put in their place??? lol.

don't listen to anything George VII says. I think its just a matter of tastes. How your brain is programmed.

Shut up Bob.

Anyhoo, they're not the best, but they did completely revolutionize rock and roll. However, so did the Who. John Entwhistle and Paul Mcartney were the two first bassists to play it as a rhythm instrument, instead of just playing the standard limited melody.

However, I do agree with Bob. It is just a matter of taste. I like the Who better too!
