What is the United States punishment for a 19 year old adult male caught with an alcoholic beverage?

Depends upon the specific charge and the situation involved. At 19 he is an adult by US legal standards, thus that already weighs severely against him.

As the extreme side, a local judge in my town just sentenced a teenage boy confirmed and diagnosed with ADD to several years in adult prison for stealing a 6-pack of beer.

Since it's so incredibly common, I can't imagine it being any worse than a slap on the wrist. You don't see the cops throwing most university students in jail do you?

In Ohio;
Legal drinking age 21.
Open container: $100-500 fine, upto 30 days jail, 1 year probation. (Anyone can be charged with this!)
Underage possession: Same as above except probation till age 21.
Underage consumption: $250-1000 fine, upto 90 days jail, and probation till age of 21.

So here in the Collage town of Kent Ohio a 19 yr old caught drinking could be charged with all three of the above.
Mostly they just get charged with underage possession; $250+ court costs and probation, jail time suspended. Unless they have a fake ID, which just makes it worse.

NOTE: About a dozen get caught every week. On Halloween thay got over 40

I wish it was, cos i'm only 17, but, alas, it's 18.

We leave compulsory school when we are 16, can go to uni until we're 22.
