Martial Arts anyone?

Well after watching XML on Discovery, ideas and idle of thoughts of the past resurfaced.

I had always had ideas and impulses to joing a dojo and start learning Martial Arts, to finaly put an end to my wondering mind if that is the path for me or not, and to get into shape (saddly being chained to the computer and tech world does not go hand in with good physique)

But I digress so let me get to my first point. How many of you had any interest or acutally do or did practice some form of Martial Arts? What words of wisdom could you pass on to me and the rest that might be interested.

My second point is that I always found the Bo staff as intriguing, as well as Nunchaks. I was wondering if any of you had any experiance with them and would you need to actually take classes with basic Martial Arts in order to learn the basics of the weapons? How effective are the books in this manner as well as how well can one learn the usege of the weapon by him self without a partner?

I await your wisdom and thoughts

I trained and spared with most of my friends whom have had training in several different disciplines TAE KWON DO JUDO AIKIDO SHOTOKAN and a few others best words of wisdom are to go to a few different dojo's that offer a few different disciplines and find one you like. Even though they may teach the same martial art the instructors are going to ahve different styles.

Hands on training from an instructor is always best but videos are 100% better than books. Keep in mind these waepons are very dangerous when you loose control of them or don't know what your doing and since a book for video isn't interactive they aren't the best for teaching but a well done video will be more helpful than any book

you might even check a few online forums for some suggestions on a few good dojo's in your area...there's even a few places such as black belt sactioning bodies or some other palces you can check....my brain doesn't wanna think of them right now.

I am training in Hap-Ki-Do.

I agree, every Master's style is different, and you must find one you are comfortable with.

Words of wisdom: dont ride a bike 6 miles to class and expect to be able to ride it home without any pain...

Kung-fu and taiji. There's a lot in breathing. But mostly in mind training.

i took tae kwan do when i was younger, i loved it cause we learned how to break boards and spar with other people.

currently im doing combat hapkido right now.

www.ichf.com

no forms or high flying kicks just pure and simple self defense. basically hapkido is a martial arts is a mixture of martial arts combined and tweaked.

i met grand master John Pellegrini in Kentucky during a seminar last weekend atuaclly. had a great time learning philiponeo stick fighting and pressure points along with meeting some great people. one martial arts that we were shown was i think its called shan shwan and its really awsome. the guy barely touched me and i was on the ground.

thats the one thing that i miss tho, in hapkido you dont spar, because what you learn is designed to hurt people.

Well there is no way I will start training in a dojo for at least a year. I am currently going to a gym to get my body into shape at a local Gym. But I do want to start on some basic weapon training, with a staff since I already have one (just could not resists getting one).

It is something that I would like to purse tho next year and that is why I want to get as much info about the art and personal impressions thoughts, dislikes, likes, etc.

I would say, during your time in the gym....work on flexibility...cuz you'll need it, plus..weigt lifting doesnt naturally produce it...usually the opposite cuz most guys dont stretch. So take some time and stretchhhhh..learn to warm up well and stretch afterwards etc.

I'm watching the XMA show right now on discovery...its ok but not as good as I thought it would be

and i agree with JP make sure you balance your excercise with sretching got to work on being flexible no matter wich martial art you try. Work on endurance and strength as well, lots of cardio
