sci-fi/fantasy that i m missing!!

First recommend some please. It's easy enough to say Stephonson, Herbert, Heinlein etc etc etc.
How about some names I might not have heard of?

Also, how do you go about finding new authors that are good? Crap shoot purchases? All word of mouth? Other suggestions?

Ursula K. LeGuin (The Dispossessed is great, and the Earthsea trilogy is a classic.)

C. J. Cherry, Downbelow Station.

John Sladek, Tik-Tok.

Gene Wolfe -- anything at all. He's difficult but worth it.

Iain M. Banks, The Player of Games.

David Brin, Sundiver (the first of the Uplift War novels), or Kiln People (an sf mystery).

William Gibson, Neuromancer (the first great cyberpunk novel).

I got a million of 'em. PM me if you've read these and want to discuss other possibilities.

Philip Dick, Arthur C Clarke and Isaac Asimov's short stories are often overshadowed by their famous novels and are well worth a look. Greg Bear is good too, especially if you like apocalyptic sci-fi

Definitely Ursula K. Leguin's Earthsea trilogy

Try some of the Dragonlance or Forgotten Realms series books. Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman collaborations especially.

Well, Theo beat me to David Brin and CraigK beat me to "Dragonlance." However, "The Deathgate Cycle" by Weis & Hickman is very good. (7 books)

One I read about 20 years ago was called,"A Mote In God's Eye." Don't remember the author thou, sorry.

All mentioned are good choices, also
Barrayar series by Lois McMaster Bujold
Liaden Series by Sharon Lee & Steve Miller
Elizabeth Moon, Cherryh,
if you also like military Sci-fi:

David drake, Elizabeth Moon , John Ringo, S. M. Stirling(the stirling/drake "Conqueror" series I thought was very good).

The Mote in God's Eye is by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. But some of Niven's solo novels -- World of Ptavvs, Protector, and Ringworld -- are even better.
