Hands up if you work on an IT Helpdesk

And what was your most common call for today and what is one of the dumbest you have done.

Most common call for me today was restarting print spoolers

Dumbest call was someone called the other day to say that everytime they opened a Powerpoint presentation all they got was messed up characters - after remoting to their PC I found that they were trying to open it in MSWord :/

your turn

You promised you wouldn't tell!!!

I don't work at an IT desk...but I am the WGM for 30+ computers at work. My dumbest "call" ever has to be when one of the sweet old lady operators called me in because her monitor was completely black and moving the mouse/hitting the keyboard wasn't doing anything. So I take a peak and see that her system, monitor and all, is completely powered OFF!
Bless her heart...

I just came to work so I've had 1 call from the office secretary telling me that I have a visitor.

The most common call yesterday was 'I have a nokia card phone (+nokia 6610), and the other doesn't call our modem pool'.

The most common meaning, in this case, that there were 2 calls of that problem

The most stupid call I got from our novell system administrator, she couldn't figure why the 6610 nokia didn't install correctly. Anyone who has installed 6610 with usb knows that it should NOT be installed when a laptop is on port replicator (the modem will refuse to work once the usb port changes, that is, the laptop taken off the replicator and plugged in some port). Also, everyone know that something is bound to go awry when you have multiple nokia modem options installed. There were old 6210 drivers installed on the computer.
Don't know if I got a stupider call yesterday, but the novell system administrator is so stupid I just can't forget her calls.

I have more stupid people studying in the school I study (studying to be it professionals, already working in the field). They can't even read what's on your screen, nor do they understand what is the purpose of dhcp, nor do they know how to restart computer after booting it with dos boot floppy (nor did they know how to make a dos boot floppy).
It amazes me that finland is such a hightech country with professionals with skills of a monkey.

Good morning everyone I hate my job.

I had to get some girls floopy disk back at my college.... Not all of our machines have floopies... just a few... the rest have guards where the disk would go to prevent people from trying to put in a disk because there is no drive... she went out of her way to remove the guard and then couldnt understand why her disk disapeared into the "black box"... shortly after some one was trying to use the Zip Drive on a MAC as a floopy drive... :: sigh ::

Help desk is but ONE of my jobs at work. They include Network Admin, PC builder and software installer... Plus a ton of administrative paper work.

I have yet to have a non-dumb call come in to help desk. Especially from the developers. They ask some of the dumbest questions of all. The developers in my company, NOT developers in general.

:raises hand:

I work for the helpdesk at Rockhurst University at my personal whim, kind of nice to not really have regular hours.

Most common question/problem: why doesn't kazaa download my music any faster? [answer, silly college student tricks are from system administrators, use K++]

Most idiotic question/problem: Why is my new Hewlett Packard computer so slow? *not really stupid, but i got a kick out of it when they decided to tell me that it was a HP* I haven't had a really bad question in a long time, lucky me.
