Re: Aren't they cool? Pine roses.

I have seen pics of those in magazines, but not in the real world...they are from the northern areas...not the deep south.

I believe that these are hemlock cones--probably eastern hemlock. I read that eastern hemlock is the official state tree of Pennsylvania!

| | Guest | Thanks Angela! You know you can come out anytime and stay a while teaching me about the tress!
I have a lot to learn and remember after Torrance CA for 20 years
Bovon, I knew they were pine cones but they were so tiny and delicate, and looking at them straight on and the way they opened they looked like little tan paper roses. | |

I'd love to come out to your neck of the woods, Surreal! I miss the weather (especially the rain!) and the woods--well, maybe I don't miss the mosquitoes!
As far as trees are concerned, I'd have to take a crash refresher course. I used to live in Vermont (and I grew up in Atlanta), and I was really interested in the trees and learned quite a bit about them. Now, however, I remember very little; it's been over 26 years since I spent any time back there! I almost can't believe I've been in San Diego for over 23 years--and this from a person who initially declared that she'd never be able to live here for more than 2-3 years, tops! Life is sure full of surprises!
Those hemlocks are sure gorgeous, aren't they--and I agree with you, those little cones are just lovely!
