Dell jobs come back to the U.S.

Dell Computers is relocating some of its telephone support positions to the U.S. It seems lots of folks complained that they couldn't understand the Indian support techs.
Quote:
Tech support for corporate customers with Optiplex desktop and Latitude notebook computers will instead be handled from call centers in Texas, Idaho and Tennessee, Dell spokesman Jon Weisblatt said Monday.
So New Englanders still won't understand what's being said.

This is very good news! I hope more companies follow suit and bring jobs back to the U.S.

Here's a letter from the latest (5 December) issue of PC Magazine:
Quote:
JOHN C. DVORAK'S DISCUSSION of outsourcing problems is right on. I tried several times over a six-month period to upgrade my MSN dial-up account to MSN DSL. The company's web site indicated DSL was offered in my area, but after several weeks, I got a letter saying it was not available. Each time I phoned MSN, I got a foreign representative who could not explain the problem. So I'd try again. I gave up when the representative told me he didn't know anything about DSL service in Redmond, Washington, where I live. I told him his employer was located in Redmond. Then I talked to a neighbor of mine who works at Microsoft. He referred me to someone who explained the problem. In the end, I signed up with Comcast, which had a serviceman installing my high-speed hookup within 36 hours.

WILLIAM ENGSTROM
Now, if only Michael Dell would talk to Bill Gates...

The US Tech work force has really been hit by the emergance of India as a nations with "English" speaking population and high technological know-how.

Hearing news like this one kinda gives you a silver lining.

It's a start. But individual consumer Dell users still have to deal with offshore service reps.

Well, when I went thru Tennesse once I couldnt understand a thing they said either..I just had to nod a smile a lot.

I went in a convenience store to buy some "no doze" and I sorta freaked out thinking somehow they knew I was from out of state and that they were doing a language spoof or something...I looked all over for Alan Funt...then I had to admit to myself...NO, THIS IS THE WAY THEY TALK ALL THE TIME.

So the possibility exists that we could call in to dell support and not understand the person and then ASK FOR an indian person! lol.
