God Discussion
I would like to have a mature discussion about god. I am non-religious, and I want to hear peoples views about god, why they believe, etc.
some basic questions:
Do you believe in god?
Why? --- Deep inside yourself why?
Did you always believe in god?
How deep do you believe (casual beleiver --> fanatic)
any other stuff would be helpful. I would really like to find out why people belive in god, or dont. I know that i never really belived, then i did, now i dont know. I try to use logic, but i cant. I cant see any reason to belive or not belive for that matter.
please, could we keep this a discussion about god, not a thread trying to convert people, or insulting any religion, or anybody else if at all possible.
Blaze

Lol, if this works, you'll have to believe in a god, because this will be a miracle!

God is real. The spiritual world is more real than the world you see with your eyes..just like in an old hollywood western you'd see those buildings, but they were just facades. Same is true for the world we live in.
Hard to "sum" God up...you have to remember His ways are so much higher than ours....we mistakenly put ourselves at the center of the universe and we judge everythign as if WE are the most important and/or smartest creature, lol. Wrong..thats why our assumptions about God can be so wrong...HE is way high above our ability to think or reason....WE dont define HIM...He is what He is, period.
Either way, God put man here on earth and gave man free will...of course man slipped up right away,lol...and fell away from God, putting a chasm between man and God....but God sent His Son Jesus to die as a "propitiation" (payment) for us....so Jesus opened the door for man to be reconciled back to God...Gods wrath and displeasure was satisifed by the sacrifice jesus made..BUT, EACH MAN has to accept that sacrifice...by accepting Jesus as the Son of God etc.
God is a real part of your life if you let Him be...and if you follow God wholeheartedly He will open up your spiritual eyes and give you understanding about many things..true understanding, not just glimpses...there are many ways to get a "glimpse" of the spiritual world...drugs, extreme fasting, meditation, occult, blah blah, but Id rather get mine right from the source as opposed to a tainted view.
In any case God brings peace if the person really gives themselves over to God. If the person holds back and tries to keep "fixing" or "running" his life, then he loses out on the real peace.
its a wonderful thing to see behind the facade of the world and modern issues etc...to see Gods plan and to see things unfolding...the only bad part about any of it is when you know something wonderful but others dont want to see it...you try to explain it, but....they dont wanna know about it....too bad. Theyd rather live in confusion and fear etc.

why does this have to be thread about GOD? Why cant we change the title to "Do you believe in a supreme being?" To me, the title of the thread automaticaly alienates people of other religious beliefs.
Personaly, i believe in M-theory (used to be String Theory). it is very difficult for me to believe that there is some all knowing supreme being that just created everything. And, why does it have to be the god of the bible? Why not Allah? Why not Scientology?
Still come back to the question from time to time, but i have always come to the same answer, there is no supreme being that put us on this earth. But, being an open minded person, always willing to listen to others ideas, i keep the subject open to discussion.
That is just me. |

It's a little too early to "believe" in string theory. So far, it's an interesting hypothesis without experimental support. When and if it gets enough, "belief" won't be necessary; you'll just accept it as valid, until a better explanation comes along -- one that has greater predictive power and (ultimately) its own set of supporting experiments.
That's the difference between scientific theories and religious beliefs.
Many scientists (though probably far fewer than the public at large) are believers in the religious sense as well. A substantial number have traditional views (standard Catholic, Protestant, or Jewish doctrines, for example). Probably as many others are theists, believing in God as some grand, cosmic organizing principle. There are plenty of serious people out there trying to find common ground between religion and science; there are others (such as the late Stephen Jay Gould) who suggest that each may have its own, separate realm of validity, but that it doesn't pay to try to merge them.
As for me, I simply don't have any religious beliefs, theistic or otherwise. As Laplace said to Napoleon, "I have no need of that hypothesis." Matter of taste. For me, "God" doesn't explain anything that can't be better explained otherwise, and the absence of "God" doesn't free me to behave badly, because I live in a human society. I don't think "secular humanism" is an insult. But it's not a religion, either.
If you find that "God" gives you spiritual or moral sustenance, fine; don't assume, though, that that's what's best for everyone. (edited for typo)

I believe in God. This is because I read a book that was written 1400 years ago which contained facts that could not have been known to human beings at that time. Only today did modern science come to the same conclusions and validate the contents. To me this is proof that God exists. Therefore I believe in God all the time and very deeply.

I figured the people who dont believe in God would jump all in this thread, lol. Hilarious. Thats like me jumping into a thread on deer hunting and telling all my theories...problem being, Ive never been deer hunting, lol.
I believe the Bible does say "it is He who sits above the circle of the earth..."
I feel for all who must read something on a meter or a chart to believe in it..what a small world to live in..."I only believe what I can prove"...waaaaahhhhhhh, lol..like a baby pouting isnt it. "Waahh I cant see it on my meter or measure it so I wont believe in it, there! hummph." I guess that sorta puts man at the top of the intelligence chart huh?
Even simple analogies prove that to be wrong....compared to God a scientist (who admittedly makes many many mistakes and disproves next year the things he fought for last year)..compared to God a scientist is like a child making mud pies, lol. Or like one of your children sitting and playing games in the living room floor....they may sit and watch the tv and have all sorts of theories about where the picture comes from etc....and if you try to explain it to them they wont possibly understand your words, lol. Same with God and us....WE dont define HIM. The concept of God itself implies that He could present to us any thought or picture he wanted to..just like if you wanted to you could "hide" from your two year old and he would NEVER find you, lol.
easy example: Every single one of you knows that no science known can tell me what you dreamed last night..but you would fight me if I told you that you didnt dream it! lol.
The dude asked about God...anyone know God or have any ideas about God...here's the place for them.
Anyone who doesnt believe..aretn there enough threads already for that?? I see no reason for you to attack another member while trying to answer Blazer's question.
