Canada gets new leader December 12

http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlates...389199,00.html

"Priorities include soothing strains created by the sour relations between Chretien and President Bush, making sure that security needs in the post-Sept. 11 era don't impede trade or border traffic with the United States, and generating research and development that spurs economic growth. "

"Martin, who has a law degree and speaks both French and English fluently, takes over with the economy on sound footing, due to his nine years as finance minister under Chretien when broad budget-cutting helped balance the books and draw down a huge deficit. Now the challenge is to continue rebuilding some of the programs hindered by reduced spending, including the military, health care and education.

With security the major issue since Sept. 11, Martin advocates working with the Americans to protect North America instead of risking isolation or unilateral U.S. actions. The two countries' trade partnership is the world's most lucrative, worth $1.4 billion a day. "

Personally, I don't think that this is going to be a good thing for Canada's social programs. Paul Martin has always been in favour of pleasing the business community, and has previously shown that he will always cede to the needs and demands of business over the social welfare of the nation. A perfect example was his decision to cut healthcare spending in the early 90's when he held the position of Finance Minister.

And although it seems that Martin will soften his position compared to Chretien with respect to federal-provincial relations, no decisions have been made which will strain the relationship between the provincial Premiers and Martin. Only time will tell if there will be a markedly different relationship between Ottawa and the provinces under the auspices of Martin.

I can see Martin being the a Mike Harris-type leader, except for all of Canada now... Sigh... We were doing so well too.
