Dessert, like a pie. Or a good bottle of wine.

Well, with wine they have to share it with everyone at the dinner, the hosts wouldn't really get to enjoy the wine

Maybe a small bouquet for the cook, a fall arrangement.
A nice seasonal candle.
A nice seasonal candle in a fall arrangement for a centerpiece when the table is not in use.

You get the idea

Something on that line. I you don't cook, a desert from the grocery store would probably pale to what they already prepared.
Generally the meal was planned a while ago.

Usually if you ask what can I bring and they say nothing but your appetite, go the non food seasonal gift for the host.

(Taken from my viewings of 'Friends', so don't hurt me!)

Turkey is Traditional at thanksgiving, and if that is the case, a decent bottle of Red Wine to go with the meal might make a good thank you..

Some folks don't drink. Red wine with poultry eh?

Wine as a gift for me would be nothing but a paper weight..

Thanks surreal, that is some excellent advice .
I'll be doing the 'single' thing at my godparents this thanksgiving and this answers the 'what should I bring' question.

We always bring pies. (Marcia's Concord grape pie is famous.)

Red wine is great with roast fowl.

Wine that is brought as a host gift is just that, a gift; it need not, nor should it necessarily be expected to be opened for that particular event. The expectation is that the host has already picked out the wine they want to serve with the meal. Of course if they like what you brought even more, they may very well open it then.

If your hosts like to drink wine, then a nice bottle of wine is always a good gift. Surreal made other good suggestions. If you take flowers, take them already in an appropriate vase, otherwise you are creating more work for your hosts.

And I agree, red wine is terrific with turkey, goose, chicken, whatever.

Bring your appetite. A box of candy for the hostess. Never mind the host. The hostess did all the work! Even if she didn't. It'll still make her happy and get you another invite!
