here's my cheap method for building shelving that's strong, of course this does take some time. buy a bunch of 1 X 2's, depending on the depth of the shelf you'll have to calculate the size of the spacers (spacers are cutup 1 X 2's), don't go over 2 inches. set a 1 X 2 down (on end), measure every two foot and screw a spacer to it, then set another 1 X 2 and screw a spacer to it but stagger the two foot, then screw that 1 X 2 to the first set of spacers, keep going til you get your depth. make some angles using 1X3' (with braces that stand on end), mount the braces, then throw the grill looking shelf you've made on top and screw in from below. 1/4 inch luan will make a nice smooth top and it's not prices to bad. The plywood doesn't have to be think because you've made a support system for it. rip it down and throw it on. The average cost for an 8 foot long shelf, 16 inches deep is about $20 bucks, and it'll hold together, right now i have a 12" radial arm saw and a 12" chop saw on mine, as well as tons of misc. crap...

It depends upon what you want to put in the garage. But really, it's really going to be a dusty place if you want to use it for storage. Doors cost a lot of money!

I'd still recommend plastic. It doesn't rust or mildew!

I guess I really over did it then on mine then because I built sets of frames out of 2x4 that are 24"x8' for each shelf. Made each shelf unit with 5 shelfs. It took 3 sets of shelfs to fit perfect along the wall that is 24' I used 2x4 as the corner post also bolted to the rafters and screwed to the concrete floor and screwed the to the wall studs. I can put an engine block on them as I have a chevy 350 block sitting on one now. BTW I used 5/8 plywood for shelfing. I'd take a pic but my camera is out getting repaired as they don't work well after falling off of my truck

I tried to reply earlier but it didn't work... hmmm, strange stuff.

Anyway, Thanks for the suggestions. I won't be puting anything to heavy (like engine blocks ), just the usual stuff - sports and outdoor equipment, tools, everyday storage kinda stuff. I think brainchild has the right idea though, I'll just have sit and try to draw something out...

I don't want wall hanging shelves. I want free-standing units that I will bolt into the floor and maybe fasten to the walls.

I was thinking about using melamine(<--Spelling?) just cause it looks nicer. Not strong enough you think?

Sorry for my delayed response, I was having puter troubles this weekend
