Now THIS is a good boss!
Morning guys...oh I'm draggin' @ss today, shouldn't have went out both Sat & Sun nights.
[gulps coffee]
Anyway, I just wanted to share with you an e-mail that my civilian boss (I'm military) sent out to my military supervisors regarding the vast computer work that I do for our squadron. My "real" job is a telecommunications specialist, but I spend most of my time working with computers...I'm often questioned by my military superiors regarding how much time I spend doing computer work (unless I'm helping them of course). My civilian boss became very tired of the complaints, so he hushed them up quickly with this e-mail: (names have been changed to protect the guilty) Quote:
I know that there has been a lot of discussion with respect to what SSgt Martoch does with respect to computers and software, but before a decision is made to limit or scale back his involvement as the work group manager for our work center, we need to take a look at what those responsibilities entail.
Does he do more than is required of the work group manager? Probably, but is that a bad thing? Don't we want people to go above and beyond? I know, "this has nothing to with telephony". But, just think about how much we all depend upon our computers and software to do our work. If he didn't do what he does for this work center, there is no doubt that we would we all suffer. I speak from experience because prior to him assuming the overall responsibility for the work center, I took care of the machines and I know how much time it takes. I don't deny that it does take a lot of his time, but consider the amount of computers and systems we have as compared to other work centers. In addition, these responsibilities were passed down from the small computer folks. We didn't have a choice. Why? I assume it was because they don't have the manpower.
He has a thankless job that most of us take for granted and don't even think about until, and when, we have trouble. He's never been recognized for his efforts, and that alone probably has something to do with any mis-conceptions there may be. I personally don't think enough can be said about what his efforts have meant to me and to this work center.
Who do we call when we have trouble with our machines? Who do we call when we need software or hardware? Who does the research to find the best, and most economical items? It's not Small Computers, but SSgt Martoch that we all call upon.
SSgt Martoch has assumed these responsibilities whether or not they are his. He has a passion and drive to ensure that our machines have what they need and operate as expected. Let me also point out that the experience and knowledge that he now possesses with respect to computers and software were not as a result of any training, but are a result of his commitment, drive and focus.
- He, along with George, built from scratch, most of the machines that we currently use within the work center, and speaking form experience, that's not a simple task. The savings through this initiative saved the government thousands of dollars. We didn't have to go that route, but if we didn't I'm sure that we would still limping along with inadequate hardware and software.
- He maintains and installs all of the the software, including NetPlus, for all of the machines in the work center.
- He has seen to it that the operating systems have been upgraded a number of times for all of the machines. And, he will once again be the one we look to for the up and coming Windows XP upgrade.
- He ensures that upon receipt of NOTAM, all of the security patches are installed and or updated. By the way, most of which do not automatically install on the client machines.
- He's always available when someone within the work center needs help or assistance.
- He's the one we go to when we need an IP address for any sort of system
I don't know what more I can say, but I hope before any changes are made with respect to his function as the work group manager, we need to take a hard look at where we will most certainly be if we do not allow him to continue to perform these very important and necessary functions. | Just goes to show that there are appreciative folks out there, even though for me they're few and far between. Thanks Boss! |

Kidding.
Good Job, Corporal Martoch.

I was floored when I saw this e-mail and who it was sent to...some high ranking folks involved here. Shahani...well, to be honest I have to thank the TechIMO community (with I often do) big time for helping me help the military. I get a lot of technical help right here...not to mention getting the latest info on parts, prices, etc.
Thank you!!!
SSGT = Super Sergeant!
