"Cryptome received a visit today from FBI Special Agents Todd Renner and Christopher Kelly from the FBI Counterterrorism Office in New York, 26 Federal Plaza, telephone (212) 384-1000. Both agents presented official ID and business cards.

SA Renner said that a person had reported Cryptome as a source of information that could be used to harm the United States. He said Cryptome website had been examined and nothing on the site was illegal but information there might be used for harmful purposes. He noted that information in the Cryptome CDs might wind up in the wrong hands. "

From http://cryptome.org/fbi-cryptome.htm

My question is what information could be used in a harmful way? Since it helps document governmental problems, it should be praised for keeping them honest.

Also, all the info they have on the site is publicly available, none of it is illegal or top secret.

The FBI, or better said the government, simply doesn't want a database that documents it's actions I would guess.

"He noted that information in the Cryptome CDs might wind up in the wrong hands. " The same is true for information in the library. Soon after 9/11, Trent Lott made a statement that said [paraphrasing] 'information I have indicates that al Qaeda was responsible.' That statement caused bin Laden to go into deeper hiding an blocked ability to get him. Thanks Trent.

Very interesting find, CM!

If the information is not classified or illegal, then Cryptome has every right to put it up on the 'net. Last time I looked, we still had an operating First Amendment.

The only logical conclusion, IMO, as well.
