New Zealand mints a Gandalf coin!

On the 50-cent piece: Her Majesty on the obverse, Ian McKellen (as the wizard) on the reverse. Frodos and Aragorns, too...

I don't like it. maybe NZ feels some sort of deep and special connection with the movie, but it is still a movie. no need to make it legal tender.

It's not just a movie to NZ, it's one of the most important economic events in recent history. The profile of NZ as a tourist destination has rocketed in the last couple of years, entirely due to the films' showcasing of the beautiful NZ landscape.
I think it's a nice way of recognising that achievement.

I Strongly agree with U-96

The LOR movies have definitely increase the Tourism in New Zealand, boosting their economy among other things.

I guess their just giving recognition where its due.

The article links to the Royal Mint as a means of obtaining one of these coins. However, I can find no information about them there.

Anyone have any ideas for obtaining one of these coins?

The Guardian interview points out that McKellen jumped the gun, announcing the coin before the Mint did. Try this.
