Are you what you wanted to be?

Everybody here has an idea of what they want to be or what they wanted to be career wise. What I'm asking is if you actually became what you wanted to be. If you wanted to be an engineer, did you actually go to school and become an engineer? If you wanted to be a mechanic, did you go through the training and become one? Did you become what you wanted? What is it that you wanted to be? If you didn't become what you wanted, why?

LOL..these days that would be what?
Lottery?
Lawsuit?
Insurance?
Politics?

(sorry iNeb, j/k - couldn't resist)

Well, of the several things that I would have liked to be, all had out-of-reach requirements. Circumstances shape your life in the real world in most cases. Same way for most everyone I know.
So no, I didn't achieve the careers I would have wanted. But it's OK - you learn to accept things and build a life around what you've become.

You guys only care about the money? That sucks. Wouldn't you rather have a steady job instead of trying to hump the American dream?

I've been through three major career changes with several non-career jobs in between. When I was a kid, computers were something you saw in Star Trek or sci-fi movies. Now my life revolves around them. When I was a kid, no one wanted to grow up to be a network administrator.

I got what I wanted to be. A mechanic. I dropped out of high school and went into trade school. I worked at my first job as an alignment, brake, and muffler mechanic. Then I became a transmission mechanic and finally an engine builder's mechanic.
