Systems Anyone ever fall asleep while driving for no reason?

I scared myself to death today on the way home from work. I fell asleep at the wheel for no reason? It was the first time this has happened to me. I woke up finding myself heading into the middle lane about ready to cross into the on-coming traffic.... I was thinking about something, then I look and I am doing something crazy like that....... Now it has me scared to drive..... I was in town and it was only for a split second that it happened but still.... I could have killed someone.... Now I am all freaked out about it.

I was driving thru atlanta once...and Id doze off in lane 2 and wake up over in lane 4..but no one seemed to notice.

here..listen to this when you drive...

It is short and somewhat "cyclical" as it has 2 parts that go back n forth.....it will make your mind wander probably..then at least youll have a reason for wrecking...it'll make the police report more interesting at least!

The only time I had such problems was during a brief period when i had first went to 3rd shift long ago....on the way home...in the morning sunlight, lol.

Id be looking at the road ahead...still looking....looking out of focus a bit...wham..looking with eyes closed.....

Id shake myself and try to wake up....Id tell myself.."ok, think of something, keep your mind occupied"...but of course my mind would get to one thing and lock on it, lol.

Luckily the drive was only 2 miles or so.

I guess you hafta keep moving...like dancing in your seat lol. Keep shifting around.

Twice in my life I've been in a trance-like state while driving. After driving many, many miles, I suddenly was aware of the fact that I had no idea where I was or how I got there. But obviously some part of my brain was functioning and kept me on the road. Like auto-pilot. Both times I had been awake and driving for more than 24 hours. Not a smart thing to do, but I wasn't too smart when I was a younger man.

Funny thing about the bouts where I cant keep my eyes open is, I have found that I am very alert usually. I do not feel as if I will fall asleep, but my eyes will burn and I will convince myself into a long blink poof I am out.

My workaround turns out to be that I need to go somewhere lit up like daylight. 711 usually works. recharge in the light and I am good to go for about 30 minutes.

Experts say sleepy drivers are as just as dangerous as drunk drivers. I guess driver's-ed came in handy.
