The hermit crabs are always on the constant lookout for new and bigger shells in the wild. They will only transfer into a new shell if they want a new home. The key word here is IF. They will exhibit the same behavior in captivity as well. Therefore is why we are able to get them to transfer the shells.
However you can not force a hermit crab to switch shells by pulling them out. If you pull them out you will effectively kill them. They must transfer of thier own will.
They are not picky about what the shell looks like, only that its bigger than thier existing shell.
The custom shells are natural shells found in the wild that have been throughly cleaned and then painted.
AFAIK you can't eat them. They are not like a normal crab.
As for what we do with them is we sell them in our shop. Kids love them and so do some adults. They are extreme low maintence and make a good household pet in a kritter keeper.
The two you see in these pictures my kids are keeping. These are thier newest pets added to our household.
So now our list consist of:
Dog
Cat
3 Danios
1 Betta
2 Hermit Crabs
Soon more to be added when the impulse drives us to add more pets to the house.
