Of Cell Phones and Techno-'Tards
I've only had a cell phone for a couple of months now. But it is the most revolutionary thing I've run across in a LOOOONG time...
Two weeks ago, I'm driving out to the desert, and our buddy Shahani calls me. So we're talking away, you know, then it hits me: These AMAZING times we live in...I woke up this morning 2 blocks from the seashore....In another hour I'll be in the Mojave Desert...and I'm talking to a friend 4,000 miles away...in my TRUCK, while driving...
It's easy to take for granted. But it can still be confusing, dig this:
Friday, I went out to the SF Valley, see some friends, right? So I gave Deni a list of their phone numbers, you know, "In case you need to reach me..."
She stops me right there and says, "Then I'll call you on your cell phone." |

Amazing, isn't it? My nephew in Afghanistan calls his Mom every now and then from the top of some mountain using a sat phone. During my two tours of duty in Korea I called home exactly twice. You had to travel to Seoul, wait for a phone, and then you could barely hear. Now he has email and a sat phone to stay in touch. He even sends pics via email. Sometimes I get to see what he was doing yesterday.

I remember being a kid and getting a comic book or something..looking in the back of it and ordering a catalog or some army men or something..and itd be the "allow four to six weeks for delivery"...it took so long, that when they finally arrived it would be a surprise cuz u forgot....and when they came it was like magic.
Or id think of stuff like sending a balloon with a note on it and wondering where it would go,...to europe, lol..castles and stuff..wow.
hehe, the internet sorta shrinks it down a bit. Now its like 4-6 minutes to order it and itll be there later today, lol.

Hey, you can even send and receive text messages with your cell via AIM and Yahoo messenger! How exciting, huh? |

| AR, umm...no.
Imagine a group of cave-men examining a cell phone...got it?
That'll be me on the left. |

Hey fellow cave dweller! I just found out about that feature myself last night. I've had my cell for about 2 months now. |

Re: Of Cell Phones and Techno-'Tards
Hold it right there!! Now I know this is not what this thread is about, but I can't let this slip.
You know better than this, Knot. Driving and cell phones are a bad combination. I don't care if you had the only truck on the road for miles - the point is you want to keep it on the road, right?
Using cell phones whilst driving is an accident waiting to happen. Either to you or someone else. Please tell me you pulled over first.
Cheers
Mick

Mick | How is talking on your cell and having a conversation with a passenger in your car any different? Or for that matter, any more dangerous? |

I know what Mick's talking about, the problem with cells and driving is the amount of concentration it takes to punch in numbers, the use of your hands, etc. Not a good combination, I'll agree.
I DO pull over when the thing rings, whenever possible. I do NOT make calls on it while driving, ever.
In this particular case, though, I was tootling down the freeway, and answered, and talked for about a half-hour. I didn't need to shift, or watch for stop lights, the only thing you do on a freeway is stay between the lines and keep your speed up. And eat your sandwich and check the map and comb your hair and change the radio station and talk on the phone and read the newspaper and eat a bowl of cereal and keep an eye out for the cops.
At least here in the US, anyway. pulling your leg again, Mick.
Edit: Swiped AR's input.
