I scanned my mystery nuts yesterday.

Anyone know what they are?

The top ones are acorns I'm pretty sure.

It's the ones in the middle I'm puzzled about. I'm pretty sure they are not walnuts. We have walnut trees too and they are much bigger. This is small.

The one's on the bottom... is it another kind of acorn or a pine nut??

The city girl goes country...

NEAT PICTURE!

I don't see any walnuts there, but I was surprised that walnuts, on the tree, have another black shell over them, that you hafta remove. So you get two for one.

Actually Knot, the shell is green while they grow. When they ripen and fall from the tree is when it starts to dry and turn black.
When they are green, it's like a tennis ball and very hard. As the shell rots and blackens it releases from the nut to what you see in the grocery store.

The middle one was in a shell like a walnut but now the shell is gone the nut is hard and has nutmeat inside.
When I lived in NC I roasted some chestnuts and discovered I love them!
I was wondering if the middle might be hickory or hazelnuts.

I've been thinking about figuring out how to identify all the trees and didn't like the way I thought to do it,, by searching for pics of trees I thought it was.. I never mentioned it to hubby...
He was out of town this week and came home with an Autobahn Society tree book
Obviously he was thinking the same thing too

In honor of your thread about that I was going to title this,,
  • I put my nuts on the scanner so...
    Ever scanned your nuts??
    I scanned my nuts yesterday.
But at the last minute backed out

Hi, not sure about the nuts. I can suggest that you take a leaf from the tree to help with ID, also a pic of the bark and maybe some immature nuts or flowers if they're available.

Why not try calling your local county extension office, this is exactly what they are there for....

good luck, hope ya got a treasure there.....

I think your right on the middle being hickory nuts {I'm wrong they are chestnuts } but the bottom almost looks like some type of cocoa bean pics of the leaves from the trees might be better than the pics of their nuts...hehe
