Error In Math ???

Explain this.... an error in math?? This has intriqued me for a loooong time.

Three guys wanted to rent a room at a motel, the owner says that the room is $30.

They decide to pay $10 a piece.. $3x$10 = $30 right.... ok, lets continue..

The owner forgets that the room was actually supposed to be $25 that night and tells the busboy to give them the extra $5 back..

The busboy thought he needed to split the money evenly between them so he keeps $2 and gives them each $1 back...... Sooo, theoretically, the guys actually paid $9 a piece since the all got $1 back ...

Ok still with me?

Now if the men now paid $9 a piece for the room and the busboy kept $2 that means $9x$3 = $27 plus the $2 that the busboy kept $27+2 = $29........

Where did the other dollar go???

Kid got $2
Boys got $1 each = $3

Total = $30

Fallacy in your initial statement is that the boys paid $9 each for the motel. Actually the Boys paid $25 to the Motel, $2 to the kid.

So if they paid $9, this includes $2 paid to the kid and $25 to the Motel.

And they got a buck apiece back.

By adding the kid twice you're making an error.

When I was in school they always told us that your could always shuffle numbers around and still get the same answers.....

If you try to figure it out the way that its written, technically it should be right....


I understand its the way that you figure it,

but think of it as using actual bills to figure it out....
