"Out to dinner" Math

OUT TO DINNER MATHEMATICS

DON'T CHEAT BY SCROLLING DOWN FIRST.

It takes less than a minute.......

Work this out as you read.

Don't cheat and read the bottom until you've worked through it!

This is fun!

1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like
to have dinner out. (try for more than once but less than 10)

2. Multiply this number by 2 (Just to be bold)

3. Add 5.

4. Multiply it by 50 - I'll wait while you get the
calculator................

5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1753.... If
you haven't, add 1752..........

6.. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should have a three digit number .

The first digit of this was your original number

(I.e., how many times you want to have eat out each week.)

The next two numbers are...

YOUR AGE! (Oh YES, it IS!!!!!)

They say THIS IS THE ONLY YEAR (2003) IT WILL EVER WORK

Wow, thats the coolest thing. Both my numbers were right. I have no idea how it all works out because everyone picks different numbers. Thats strange.

This is the only year it will work if you use 1753. To make it work any other year, you need to adjust that number. Why this works seems pretty obvious if you put it in math terms. The formula works out to:
(2k + 5)50 + 1753 - 19xx.

The last two terms cancel out by virtue of your birth year subtracted from 2003 (i.e., your age) and the 250 (5 x 50). So you're left with a three digit number with k in the hundreds place and your age in the last two places.

It doesn't work if you use 1752?

(2k+5)50 + 1752 - 19xx = kage

or

(2K+5)50 + 1753 - 19xx = kage

If I hadn't already had my birthday, it would still come up with the correct answer.

You have to adjust the number depending on whether your last birthday was in 2002 (use 2002-250=1752) or 2003 (use 2003-250=1753).
