Curtains Ordered for Media Coverage of Returning Coffins
If you don't see any coffins, then nobody died. |

I am not surprised by this. The only thing that I really don't like is: Quote: |
A White House spokesman said Bush has not attended any memorials or funerals for soldiers killed in action during his presidency as his predecessors had done, although he has met with families of fallen soldiers and has marked the loss of soldiers in Memorial Day and Sept. 11, 2001, remembrances.
| I really hope that isn't true.

"But in early 1991, at the time of the Persian Gulf War, the Pentagon said there would be no more media coverage of coffins returning to Dover, the main arrival point; a year earlier, Bush was angered when television networks showed him giving a news briefing on a split screen with caskets arriving."
Might that have something to do with it? Using a split screen that way sounds more like the media making a politcal statement rather than simply reporting the news.

Here's some interesting statistics. Since combat operations in Iraq were declared over on May 1 there have been, in the US,...
203,386 tobacco-related deaths
52,246 alcohol-related deaths
41,821 people killed in car accidents
19,749 deaths related to adverse reactions to prescription drugs
14,438 suicides
8,628 homicides
7,993 deaths related to all licit and illicit drugs
7,918 aids-related deaths
7,864 people killed in car crashes involving alcohol
3,589 deaths related to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as Aspirin)
During that same period 200 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq.
I say this not to belittle the deaths in Iraq, but to show that people die for a number of reasons, and I don't see members here constantly nagging about things like tobacco-related deaths. I think it's sick of people to use the deaths in Iraq for political reasons. Those soldiers deserve more honor than that. They deserve more honor than being paraded on the news for political reasons too.

i totally agree J-Excel.
The only difference between the soldiers deaths and the others you mentioned is that they sacrficed themselves for our country. In my mind they are very noble and deserve the utmost respect.

Might I point out that the size the US population is roughly two thousand times that of the number of US troops in Iraq? Of course the number of people dying from this and that are greater.
It's not that our troops are dying at a horrific rate, anyway; just that if Bush had his way, we wouldn't know about them at all.

Most of above are voluntary. The people had an option....to smoke or not, to drink and drive or not, and some were accidents, like car accidents which just happen to anyone.
The soldiers killed had no option. They were political sacrifices. So Mr Bush and his associates could make money and stay in power.
This is what I get concerned about the most.

| So, the number of deaths in Iraq is on par with alchohol and tobacco related deaths. Maybe we should start seeing all those coffins on TV too. Besides, the media tells us about EVER SINGLE DEATH in Iraq. We don't need pictures of coffins for that. Quote: |
The soldiers killed had no option.
| Serving in our military isn't optional? I didn't know we reinstated the draft.

I know several kids that are overseas right now, that were practically forced into the military. It was either enlistment or jail time.
