Tequila question.

So what is the difference between regular (clear) and gold Tequila?

6pac

this might help

Quote:
Distilling takes place in equipment called a still. There are two main types of stills. The pot still distills one batch of liquid at a time. It is used to make tequila, Scotch whisky, Irish whiskey, and a type of brandy called cognac. Other spirits are made in column stills, which permit continuous distillation. Column stills are the type most often used by distilleries in the United States to make whiskey and vodka. .

Most kinds of spirits contain from 40 to 50 percent alcohol. All spirits are colorless when first made. But whiskey darkens naturally, and some spirits are artificially colored by manufacturers. The different kinds and flavors of distilled alcoholic beverages depend on the type of fermented mixture used. Distillers produce brandy from fermented fruit juices. Whiskey and vodka are made from various fermented grain mashes, including corn, rye, and wheat. Rum is made from fermented molasses or sugar-cane juice. Tequila comes from the fermented juices of the maguey plant. Manufacturers blend alcohol vapors with additional flavoring materials to make gin.

Why do I ask? A friend of mine said that gold Tequila is from a special plant but I said it was from food coloring.

Who is right? Me or him?

thanks

6pac.

I don't know what differs in production of them, but as far as I know (and I've had my share of tequila experiences) this is what the main difference is:

Silver Tequila tastes more, and is used for shots.

Gold Tequila has a milder taste and is used for longdrinks and such.

now...If I'm wrong, remember that I am under the influence of alcohol and that it is already 2002 here.

Ahhh--- the blue agave
There are four different classifications of tequila:
Blanco - Also known as silver. A clear tequila that is not aged. Best for mixed drinks.
Joven - Also known as Gold. An unaged tequila that has has cane sugar or carmel added for color and sweetness. Makes a nice, sweet Margarita.
Reposado - Aged in wood tanks or barrels for at least two months. Smother than Blanco or Joven.
Anejo - Aged in oak barrels for at least 12 months, it has a soft, smooth flavor from the time spent in the aromatic wood. This is the tequila to sip slowly and appreciate.

All I know is it dont take much to make me become vomitronic!
Use it wisely...(gimme the anejo please) :-)

One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor!

You can't forget Mezcal! The firewater with the little worm in the bottom of the bottle! Thems are crunchy little devils! Yum!

Sixpac_XP -
Basically you are right. The only reason that tequila is gold is that they put carmel coloring in it to make more appealing to us "gringos".
