apples, oranges, bananas.. or maybe a fruit medley?
I was bored today and got to reading through old posts, mostly concerning p2p sharing... my question to you all is how do you define art/artist? try to think of all mediums and not just music, this includes painting/sculpture/acting, ec cetera... there are a numberr of things floating around in my mind, that's why i ask... for instance, you can go into art museums all over the country and appreciate visual arts, most of the time for free or a few bucks... most of these artists are dead, and being able to enjoy their work is free, yet you still have to pay to enjoy the work of dead musicians? I was also thinking of the struggle of artists, I was thinking of jerry lee lewis mainly, he hit it big, fell from grace, and still played in little dives, i'm guessing because he really loved music, would metallica do the same? does this make one more of an artist than the other? burning movies is next i think, will Tom Cruise become the metallica of the movie industry? if so do i care if he doesn't makes 10 million a movie? are these artists expectations for what they make insane and is this why modern america has come to believe that file sharing is no big deal? Is it really all about the money and if it is, are they true artists? Is it that all artists should be poor, or is it that they should love what they do enough to not care about the money? Is Brittany Spears really considered an artist? If you buy a painting for 10 million, the value increases over time and you can sell it later for 15 million, so will anyone buy my cd's 5 years from now for 30 bucks? Did Andy Warhol illegally download the Campbells soup logo?

Just a note about dead artists- isn't it that if a musician has been dead for X amount of years the music becomes free and legally accessible by anyone?
The difference with painters and music is though that when you go buy your Mozart CD someone has played his music. Nobody else is painting the pictures again. I believe you can get the sheet music for free since Mozart has long since passed away- but you've still got a musician who needs to play the music for you if you're buying a CD.

lol, Sao95, you've got enough questions here for half a dozen threads! Quote: |
my question to you all is how do you define art/artist?
| As a working artist myself (as opposed to the dead kind ) I have lots to say on the subject....on the first page of "Paintings" on my site, it says that: "Art is the quality of communication, and to understand why an artist creates, you only have to ask yourself why man communicates." |

And that right there goes to prove his art ability....who else would put those three things together, and actually have it turn out?
It did turn out, didn't it Knot?

Are you referring to me and the painting, Red?
If so, my word, YES! The painting sold last March for $3600, and boy I was one grateful guy!
Plus, it went to a well-known collector who has lots of Wyeths, and Calders and Utrillos, among others...my painting of Albert will be sharing space with these guys' work, HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, wheee!
w00t! shameless self-backslapping, hehehe, I don't care! |
