Racing Bikes....help!

I'm feeling a little out dated, im still using my dad's 20 y.o. racing bike....the gears slip a lot sometimes get stuck....well, im looking for something affordable...(i know they can get expensive, so something under $650) that offers best price vs performance. I know little about racing bikes, so give some advice!

thx

Are you talking about road racing or mountain bike racing? You can get some great deals used. One thing that might be worth a look is a local bike club. I know the MTB (mountain bike club) around here has bikes for sale often. They really take care of them and usually have really top-of-the-line used stuff for sale. If they don't have anything for sale, they'd at least be good for pointing you in the right direction in regards for what to look for. Personally, I can not make any recommendations because I am still a newbie in the MTB arena.
I wish you well!
Dave

Im thinking he is talking about a roadbike (Dads bike is 20 years old, a 20 y.o. "Racing Mt Bike" might be pretty funky) the older bike could be a better bike then you can now buy---im dreaming full Campagnolo equipped, corncob geared, European made light frame and leather seat possibly about 18-19 pounds w/1" wheels and sewups slightly used in need of a good tuneup---

Dave's advice is right-on, used cant be beat as alot of bikes are well ridden and kept up or not used at all---ask your Dad what he thinks...

Puts me in mind of my old bike - 1973 Raliegh Competition. Has everything you described, including the Reynolds 531 double-butt tube fluted ultralight frame, full Campy gear & hubs, etc. No kickstand, just balance it on a toeclip! I've still got it, still in perfect condition. Hasn't been ridden in over a decade, but it has been lubed & waxed, that black finish looks like new! Mothballed it when I started driving & didn't ride again till my kids were old enough... by then it was already a classic!
Believe it or not, I found a description & pic of it - or nearly anyway. This one's a '74 but looks identical, some equipment differences.

Regarding more modern bikes, we've got GT's now, but not mountain bikes. Cross bikes, mixture of on & off road features. Large wheels, wider than road bikes but narrower than mntn bikes. Durable w/o the rough ride, they're great for riding gravel or dirt trails.

Regardless what style you want, used is the way to go. Be sure to check out pawn shops as a source also. Some of those shops seem to think "a bike is a bike" and $50- $100 will buy one...

Hey, I just remembered - if you want a nice road bike, I've got a really good Schwinn I'd like to sell. 14 speed, 23" frame, 27" wheels, flat handlebars. Can't remember the model, but this was NOT one of their cheapies! Was mine in between the Raliegh & the GT's, so it's around 14-15 yrs old & was used for less than 5 yrs. I'd let it go for $200 plus shipping, will take pics if you're interested.

The Raleigh, however, is NOT for sale!!!

That picture looks a lot like the Schwinn I got for Christmas when I
was 12. I had that bike until some one got in the garage and stole it. I was 18 and overseas when that happened. Even though I also had a motor-bike much of that time I rode that Bicycle a lot.

shawshank: I should be able to help you out. I know the price range, but I have some questions first:
What level rider are you?
What kind of terrain will you be riding. (Flats, straights, etc).
Distances?

Nice bike Ed---
Right down to the Brooks leather saddle, I traveled over a million miles at sea and took a similar bike with me---I rode it in places where they thought I was riding a rocketship having never seen a bike similar---(who would ride a fine roadbike on the island of Nukulofa?) ever filled an innertube with sand to make it back to the ship before it sailed?---I have alot of great pedaled memorys having cranked thousands of miles...
