driving with parking lights on

so:

1. Why do people drive in the evenning with their parking lights on?

2. Why are they called parking lights? who actually uses them for parking?

just curious.

Thanks to 6ft4 for pointing out my error. It's been a long day, early bed time tonight.

I use them for parking when I am pulling up to the front of someone's hosue so as not to shine my lights into their windows. As for other times, I use them when it is dusk, but I really don't know why I use them versus my full lights.

They're now required in Canada. So you can be seen, not so you can see. The Government claims a dramatic reduction in accidents, but that may be the well-known effect produced by any change: people are initially aware of it and respond. But it wears off in time...

i would think having your lights on would make you more visible than just the yellow parking lights.

mike, i think you are thinking of the wrong lights. parking lights are the yellow lights on the fronts of cars. driving home 20 minutes today, i noticed at least 20 cars with just parking lights on. it was dusk, and that is the time you would expect to see them. i am just wondering what the logic is behind just using them.

Just easier for you to see them as oncomming traffic, really. Wouldn't you rather be wondering why everyone has their lights on than wondering if someone is coming down the road at you?

Parking lights are just that; lights to illuminate your car when it's parked. They are not meant for driving. If it's dusk or dark or early dawn, you should have your driving lights on if you're driving.

Were they parking lights... or were they daytime running lights that GM is putting in a lot of their vehicles now?

My Chevy Silverado has the daytime running lights that look like dim headlights, but some of the GM vehicles now have the yellow daytime running lights as well. They come on automatically when the vehicle is put in "drive" and only go off if the vehicle is put back in "park" or the headlights come on.

As Theo said... they are "So you can be seen, not so you can see."
