I thought it was Valve Inc., not Vivendi unless they were bought out.

Ok I am confused. They just leave one copy of the code in an email system? It is not stored on anyones hard drive or burned on CD.

This would appear to be a strange way to run a business.

Leaving all your eggs in one basket simply does not even seem to pass the stink test. Wierd.

They used Outlook holes to install a keygrabber. This keygrabber gave all the logins/passwords needed to get into the system with an FTP program and get some of the code.

The worst part is now HL2 won't be released untill April 2004. This should really piss off ATI, who paid over 5 mil USD to bundle a prequil version of HL2 with they're 9800 XT cards. I wonder if they'll get they're money back.

Or maybe ATI wanted them to wait till they can come out with they're next series of cards, which would be about April and Valve made this all up to deley the release for ATI. Millions of dollars can buy you a lot.

Well the fact that they did not keep a hard copy on disk just seems foolish.

You do years of development and leave all your work on a volitile system where the whim of a virus or power surge could wipe everything out. Not solid thinking IMO.

I store all my large programs in at least 3 separate locations. A network drive, My personal machine, and zipped on my spare drive. I even go as far as to burning copies of particularily complex software.

It is not for theft reasons.

Just because I have seen windows and PC hardware in action.

I need not risk dozens of hours of coding to the whims of a single media type. Being that storage is so cheap I can not see any reason to avoid backing up ones work.

************it was a hoax****************
Valve will be making a statement soon staing that HL2 will still be shipping this holliday season. All is good in the land of gaming once again.

I guess that French source spoke out of they're butt.
