Went to a terrific concert last night.
The Smithsonian Institution's Axelrod Quartet is performing all sixteen of Beethoven's string quartets this season, in five concerts; last night was the first in the series. They did Opus 18, Number 1 (the first quartet); Opus 96, the Serioso, a middle quartet; and Opus 132, a late quartet.
The performances were all wonderful; but I was rather sad to see that of the several hundred people in the hall, there weren't more than a small handful who were under age 50...

Yeah, but that's because System of a Down cancelled!
That's a lot of Beethoven! I like the stuff, but I find it to be of the same interest as say techno in my personal tastes...makes a great background music, but I get rather bored of it as a main event. Don't get me wrong, classical is far superior to techno, I wasn't trying to make a comparison there. But I have worms and A.D.D. (or something!)

I became a fan of classical when I was living in Germany and got hooked on Mozart. The film Amadeus only solidified that addiction. Correlli, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Bach, Pachelbel, Schubert...all geniuses. Real music.
Today it's all about bass and volume. If you can't hear it three miles away, you have a wimpy system. Never mind that your "music" (and I use that term VERY loosely) is invading someone's home or disrupting someone's sleep. That's their problem.

I used to be into classical in my early teens and lost interest as I grew older.
Now that my son has been taking piano lessons for the last 5 years I have rediscovered the classics.
Pachelbel, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, etc.
I am amazed when I listen to some classical pieces the resemblance to a lot of modern music. A little ripping off going on there!
When I can't sleep I put on the classical station and I end up sleeping like a baby. Even my puppy sleeps through the night when listening to the station. (Should have put it on last night)

Sounds like a great time. Wish we lived down that way, would have been great.
I've taught my son to try to appreciate all kinds of music, but he enjoys the same stuff I do, classical and classic rock! |

Theo, if I had known you were going, we could've gone together!
Not quite Linkin Park but it'll do.

Sounds like a good time. I haven't been to a classical music concert since freshman year or so.
Blue Man Group tonight though! |

Amazing, I have a common view with Theo! I do listen to rock, but I gotta have my classical.

[QUOTE]but I was rather sad to see that of the several hundred people in the hall, there weren't more than a small handful who were under age 50...p/QUOTE] that is sad...out here i'm part of the 0.1% that listens to classical music (although not primarily).
i really wish i could have gone to that concert (kinda hard when you're a poor broke college student living a thousand miles away), it sounds like it was great. beethoven is one of my favorite composers...the first real piece i was able to play on the piano was moonlight sonata. personally my favorite composer is shostokovich (i'm more of a russian music fan...more passionate).
For me classical music is what i listen to when i really want to experience music.
