P2P question about copyrights
I was just wondering, the RIAA is suing over P2P file sharing copyrighted music, right? If you didn't already know, I am a big Grateful Dead fan. Is the Grateful Dead included in that?
If any of you ever saw the Dead in concert, you know that recording, copying and bootlegging their music was fine with them. They encouraged recording. Does that make them exempt from the RIAA rules or guidelines? Is the Dave Mathews Band the same about this?
I do remember it all starting with Mettalica over at Napster.
What about the Dead?! |

You'll have to find out who releases their records and go from there.
The RIAA isn't listening to the bands very much. Just because the Grateful Dead supported boot legging, doesn't mean that their record company does.

right, which brings up a topic i was thinking about last week. bands that break up, or just cease to make music, i think that their music should be public domain then. cuz the band isnt getting the money anymore right? it all goes to the RIAA.

Jerry I see where your coming form with that question, but thats why a lot of people are annoyed with metallica over this. Metallica does let people record at their shows but get their panties in a wad when it's shared over the internet.
6f4 your wrong. it doesn't all go to the RIAA. There are still people who own the rights to the music.
With your example: After a band breaks up, if the music is sold or licensed to a movie or something similar, royalties are still collected by the people who own the rights.
Take Michael Jackson for example. He owns the rights to a lot of The Beatles' music catalog. If someone wants to use the music from those Beatles albums they have to go through Jackson first.

Craig is correct. Even though the band isn't together, the money still has to go somewhere. The RIAA still doesn't get all of the money, but they usually get a fair share of it.

Yes, and if the band was wise enough to hang on to [at least some of] their rights, they can individually receive checks for royalties even if they are no longer together. But a lot of bands sign their rights to the music away just for a shot at fame and fortune. Tis a pity.

| I would say an unfair share of it.
In answaer to the question I have no idea,I don't think the RIAA really cares what the artists have to say

I do have 100's of different songs by the GD on cd. The deal with the Dead is, they could play a song 100 times and it would always be a little different. Not really a studio band, more of a live band. |
