Society collapsing?

Has anyone here taken a sociology class? I am currently taking one, and frankly the whole thing is leaving a rancid taste in my mouth.

My teacher is what some people would call a nut or a radical, since he is really big on the concepts of social control, the suppression of the working class, death of the middle class, ect... To be quite honest though, he makes such good points (AKA, in every major newspaper you will see a business section, but no "Labor" section) that I can't help but beleve a lot of what he says.

This is not to say that I take it as gospel; its quite obvious that he is biased, but with headlines constantly stating how more and more businesses are moving overseas, more people loosing their jobs, more people going without health insurance, and more CEO's getting more money, I can't help but think that a lot of it is true.

Is the working class being beat down? Do you think that corporate leaders are only interested in their own wealth? Do you think that the President is a crook? I'm just looking for opinions about these issues from a different perspective.

If you feel so inclined they would be appreciated.

Thanks!

There are signs the end is near. For starters, the Cubs are playing baseball in October.

Money and influence is the name of the game. If you got it, you're in the club. If you don't, tough luck.

Perhaps you could explain to him about the death of communism.

The surer sign the end is near would be if the Cubs and Red Sox met in the World Series.

This forum is not a good representation. We have a few liberals on here that have taken over and only post negative stuff. They and their young (mostly) followers are their own propaganda machine trying to turn everyone into cynics like themselves. So please do not follow the poor example of those that only tear down and can not (not only do they choose not to - they are not able to) build anything if they wanted to.

You must realize that many (if not most) college professors are very heavily biased to the liberal left. They do not take facts into account and try to preach emotion to those in school to make them hate the way that they do. Your instructor sounds no different. If you really want to know what is going on, you must look at both sides and decide for yourself. From what you have quoted, your instructor seems to be preaching communism.

What it boils down to is what type of person you are. Do you follow your heart or your brain? Do facts and logic rule you or do emotions? Conservative live for facts and proof, while liberals look for what feels good.

I'd suggest reading a few news sites to get both sides of the story. If you read CNN or watch the Big 3 nightly news guys (abc, nbc, cbs), then you will have a good basis for the liberal side of things. If you want more pure unadulterated liberalism (emotional), ask Theophylact. He is our resident ultra-left member. While I am more moderate than many give me credit for (because of the battles I choose to fight), I would suggest a few conservative sites that can give you a good idea of what the conservative (factual) ideas are.

http://www.townhall.com/ (conservative news with the biggest names in conservative writing)
http://www.freerepublic.com/ (superb political forum)
http://www.foxnews.com/oreilly/ (Fox News is the most balanced news reporting in the US, but they have a lot of conservative commentary shows and people call them conservative for this reason. The link above is to a conservative leaning commentator.)

And I must agree that I will be running for cover if the Cubs and Sox reach the WS!

No- but the working class thinks they are because they have forgotten what it is like to be beaten down. Making 20-30k/yr is not being beaten down.
Yes- but in their ambition, they bring everyone around them in a positive economic position. Ambition is not bad and teaching that ambition is bad is communism and against human nature. Being out for your own interest is ok, as long as it is done ethically. MOST businessmen are ethical, despite the recent outcries b/c of Worldcom, enron and martha stewart.
No- absolutely not. He is working to make the US better and the only blemish on his record that has not been wiped clean is the Haliburton contract situation, which has to do with the VP.

God.. I hate teachers/instructors like that. Biased so bad he** wouldn't have them. They have spouted their one sided crap for so long..even they believe it, and after a year or two..most become very good in brainwashing. Brainwashing only affects the weak..but I am eternally amazed at the percentage of the weak minds in schools that are being made into some sort of social slave.
