A potentially historic earthquake and two powerful aftershocks struck Hokkaido in northern Japan early Friday morning, causing major structural damage, NBC News reported. The quake preliminarily registered magnitude 8.0, a rare category of earthquake capable of causing widespread destruction.

Hokkaido, which is about the size of Austria, is the second-largest of Japan’s four main islands. It is home to 5 million people, a nuclear reactor and active volcanoes.

I'm starting to believe, like much of the world probably already does, that America and we Americans just need our pompous, self-centered, self-absorbed asses kicked!

Here it is, the top of the hour...all the news stations start running down their top stories, in order of importance naturally. I start bouncing around the news stations to get some info about this quake. ... All the damn "news" stations are leading off their broadcast with info about the Democratic debate.

What?!?? No, I mean, W.T.F.

This is an 8.0 quake! That's BIGtime in quake numbers, no matter where it hit. Then add the fact it hit our friends and fellow EQ suffers in Japan. Holy crap. There is no way in hell there should be stories that are more important. Much less this meaningless dribble that is so unimportant as to make reading tomato soup ingredients seem interesting!

I'm really really disgusted right now. These stupid talking airheads and just smiling away babbling on about which of 12 democrats did best at the debate. Oh, and btw there was an 8-point-friggin-0 earthquake over in Japan....but first, a major mishap at the BbbleYum factory is sure to spell rising bubble gum prices for Americans. Let's go to Chuck in the field for the close=up on the BubbleYum boo-boo.

What a bunch of conceited, over-inflated ego-saturated, fat-headed, pompous asses we Americans are!!!! Seriously! I'm the kind of pissed-off right that changes my point of view…and maybe opens my eyes. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

At least you live in California, OuTpaTienT... There's a slight chance that you might be interested in the Democratic debate. The media has been rambling on and on about it all day here, too... but I live in Michigan... it's not really that important of an issue here!

Lately I have taken advantage of the media's lack of useful news by going outside and enjoying the weather.

Channel 7 news had it on as 'breaking news' at 4pm [or maybe it was 4:30pm, not sure now as I had just turned it on ...]

This is a HUGE quake. It was reported l60 ppl were injured, no reported deaths so far. Office surveillance video shows tremendous and violent shaking inside an office.

According to same news, Hokkaido is not very populated near the quake area, and tsunamai is feared...

I just spotted it on the news and was away from my comp but I hope all our TechIMO friends over that way are ok. Hopefully things settle down over there soon. I spotted some reports of tsunamis and larger aftershocks
