I agree with the stupidity of it, but I would guess they were thinking that "God" is somewhat generic and would suit just about anyone but the atheists (and who cares about them heathens anyway, right?).

Yeah, God is pretty generic. If you lowercase the g, god, then there's absolutely no religious value in it.
