Uh-oh. Dog eats buckeye.
One of my dogs jsut ate some stupid Buckeye I've had for a long time (luck charm). I'm worried because I've heard buckeyes have mercury in them. Any signs I should look out for? Or should I take him to the vet first thing?

Thank you Gomer. I had called Poison Control, but they didn't know (said there were many kinds of buckeye nuts...dunno). I'll keep on the lookout.

If you suspect that an animal has been poisoned by eating a plant, call your vet immediately! If it is after clicnic hours, there should be a recording with a number for emergency vet services. You could also call your local poison control center; they should have information pertaining to pets. Make this call BEFORE you attempt to treat the animal for poisoning. If you are advised to seek medical attention for your pet, try to bring in a piece of the plant, along with any other information you may have on the plant (name, any fertilizers or leaf cleaners used on the plant, etc.)

Oh man, I feel so messed up right now. Part of me says take them in, the other part says to wait until they show symptoms. I mean, they only chewed up the buckeye, not comletely ate it. But....
oh man
As soon as one thing out of the ordinary happens, I'm rushing them in.

How's your dog doing? I've got a lab that was bad to eat toadstools when he was a pup. I sat up with him till 4am once. The vet said he had never heard of that before.

I uesd to sacnk on bcueyeks all teh tmie, tehy're hrmaesls
My aunt had a dog that swallowed a buckeye whole. Didn't do anything to the dog. In fact, she didn't even know (and neither did we who were there at the time) there was anything more than a choke hazard with the thing. But that dog didn't get sick. But the dog was retarded...but that was BEFORE it ate the buckeye, so maybe he's not a good example..
