Homemade computer desk

I really need a new computer desk.

AOL Key Word: heavy duty
oh wait, got another one to add
AOL Key Word: cost efficient

$40 Staples fold up special + 60lb 19" monitor = sagging table.

Then! we

+ 80-100lb 26" TV

= table on floor

hmmmmmmm, mucho problemo.

Any decent pre-fab desk that I've seen is mucho $$$. I know people have made them before. Pics, details anyone? I think Socal has one?

What I'm looking for is a strong table (use a door perhaps?), that doesn't look like a tool bench and I'd like to add a hutch/shelf type thing to it but might buy that....hmmm or not. I dunno.

Suggestions are welcome

Warthog

My girlfriend and I built a desk for her two children about a month ago. We used two $15 sink cabinets from Lowe's and a piece of wood. All together it was like $45. Has two 15" monitors and two "toddlers" playing on it.

Work good, last long time.

Solid doors aren't too expensive for the bottom of the line....then you could cut it with a table saw to the depth and length needed. The problem might be by the time you get the legs and hutch going, you've paid the same in wood that a prefab would cost. I would start by looking for unfinished oak and pine warehouse furnature places nearby...you might find a large and simple, but solid, desk cheap.

Or ... you could just get rid of all your furniture ... and just keep everyting on the floor! Problem solved.

My desk is built from a door

http://www.techimo.com/photo/index.pl?photo=123

It looks small in that photo, but it's not - 8' long x 2'7" wide- lots of room (but never enough) and I've put a printer cab and a file cab as the end bases.

A door is great; it's wide, long and you can design and build upon it to whatever suits you

I just wish I had found matching wood

Get ahold of one of our newest members known as "Knothead"---he can fix you up with something you will hand down to your kids...

Jeez---little Warthogs running all around...what a thought!

you would laugh to see my desk, it's actually my dresser with the left side drawers cut out. it has a solid base as well (pretty heavy) so the missing drawers dont lesson the integrity. though i'd put the tv on the good side . sorry no pic lol

i'm suprised JimG didn't get in on this one... he's building me a desk from scratch. mdf, oak, good quality wood... he's mostly doing it because he looks forward to throwing my current desk out the window.

Is there a Goodwill or Salvation Army store around. Ive seen some desk at those places as low as $15.00. I paid $30.00 for mine. It is L shaped and in very good condition.
