Sad cat story...........
Was driving tonight (yeah, one of those ....) and spotted something reflective, I moved around it, thinking it was trash. Dead cat
I turned around, parked next to it. Looked like it died instantly although I didn't examine it, game animals are one thing, pets another.....
I realized I couldn't do much or rather didn't know what to do, so I searched out a cop, not too hard to find in my small town. 3-4 minutes later, I was nearing the area again and a cop was there. He drove off, made a u-turn onto a road that led to the vet.....all that was left was the dark spot on the road
People that hit and run are on the same list of child/wife abusers.

no offense intended, im not trying to argue w/ you, but in my opinion unless the cat or any other animal is still alive and suffering then its no big deal. i mean what is done is done and its dead and it aint commin back. of course, if it were my own cat or dog that was run over, be it dead or alive and dying i would be really sad and i would probably hunt down and kill whoever ran over it. i actually know some people(i live way back in the sticks(woods)) that might consider a fresh, non-pet type animal roadkill as supper(i know, its sick, but if thats all you got...).
Just some thoughts...

Poor kitty, I treat my three cats like I treat my kids, Except the cats can sleep on my bed while the kids have to sleep in thier own
My cats also don't go outside, to many things can happen to my darlings out there.

My cousin's dog (MY dog's brother...) was a hit and run.
I understand what you're saying cracked, but I have a very hard time doing the "glad it didnt happen to me" attitude. What I mean is, I felt for the owners of the cat because I would be ultra pissed if it happened to my dog.

This reminds me of what happened to my cat when i was about 7 years old. My neighbor down the street hit and ran my cat tigger. She just had babies about a week before being ran over. The neighbor didn't have the common decency to come to our house to tell us he accidently ran over our cat or nothing so me and my stubborness marched right down to the neighbors house and started to give them royal H**** lecture about hit and run. My brothers found out what I was doing and came after me and litterly had to drag me away from the neighbor house kicking and screamming and all.
Poor Kitty.

perhaps im a closet hippy, but personally, i feel bad whenever i see a dead animal by the side of the road. Once I was driving home from a club with my mates at 8:00am, when all of a sudden a bird flies straight into the windscreen at about 70km/h. Instantly everyone knew it was bad karma, and brought a otherwise great night down a bit.
