Talk Ordered DSL and lost my phone line

Well I've been AWOL a couple of days. The long version of the story is:

Signed up for DSL a couple of weeks ago. This was the first time it has been available in my area and I jumped all over it. The ISP called the house on the 9th and told my wife "OK, you should be up and running". My wife told them "Well, I know nothing about this stuff and my husband is at work. I'll have him check it when he gets home."

Well, needless to say I checked it when I got home from work (like a kid at Christmas) and it didn't work. I checked everything at my end and found no problems so I called the ISP. The help desk said "It must be your house wiring". It wasn't.

I called them back on the 10th and told them "It's on your end. It's not even getting to my house". (I had checked at the box outside the house). I heard nothing else from the ISP so I called back on the 11th. The help desk said "We will get to it on the 12th". They didn't.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse my wife calls me yesterday (15th) at work and says "The phone line is dead". For crying out loud I can't even get dialup now! The phone line was dead until this afternoon (16th) and when I got home the phone and the DSL were working. . . HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY!!!

It's not the best connection (633.6 kilobits per second) but it beats the 49 kilobits per second that I was getting. Not bad for living in the sticks I guess. It took the ISP a week to get everything sorted out.

Mike

They do that, sometimes. I get fast DSL here, but ever since it was hooked up, I've had static on all the regular telephones with the filters installed.

Have fun with your new broadband!

I love the tech help ppl...they always say its at your place. The last time I had to call my tech help ppl.. I could not receive email.. I could connect to the net (dialup).. I could send email.. I could not receive email. I had sent notes to myself from hotmail..yahoo and juno...plus my own SMTP... I received the one I sent out from my ISP..but not the ones from hotmail..yahoo or juno..so..what did my tech help ppl say?.. I had a virus!!...and that I should get some technical people locally to go over my system and clean it. I wish I could have been talking face to face with that individual... I would have throttled him..but I couldn't..so I did the next best thing.. I told him I built and maintained machines..that I probably have cleared out more virii than he had birthdays..that he didn't have a dam* clue what he was talking about and I hung up. That was Saturday..by Monday I still didn't have my POP up and running so I called the ISP direct..within 20 minutes I had over 100 emails waiting plus a phone call from the email server apologizing!

Hey Bovon, how's it going?

I know what you mean. I told the last person I talked to that I service print servers for a living and that I set up the DSL at the office twice (once when we got it and once when we moved). I know what I'm doing and I'm 99.9% sure it's on your end!

On a side note, we lost DSL at the office yesterday. I checked everything and came to the conclusion that it was on their end. I thought "well crap, another talk with a different help desk". I walked outside for a minute and when I looked across the parking lot I saw a backhoe. There were 5 guys gathered around a hole in the ground with this OH CRAP look on their face. I yelled into the office "Do we even have a dialtone on the phones?" "No" was the responce. They had cut the phone line!

Tweak your connection here

http://www.dslreports.com/

Run Dr TCP and adjust your RWIN for best performance> Also try out different MTU settings Default is 1500, I run mine at 1452 and Speed tests show almost 1300 kbps. Once you get it set and running well.....Leave it alone !!!!! Take my advice

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/7801

Above describes MTU setting.

I tried DSL with Earthlink before coming to my senses & getting cable. The tech support run-around was a large part of my leaving them ASAP.
They get it set up & tell me it's good to go - like you, I'm excited, can't wait.
First several days it doesn't work often & never faster than dial-up. Tech support repeatedly ran me though the same tests, over & over. They claim the line is good & tests fine from their end. Finally it works regularly even though no changes at my end. Still s-l-o-w. A couple of frustrating weeks pass.
Repeated calls for help finally got them to admit I'd only spoken to "level 1" techs, who don't even have access to info on known network issues!! Got put to an "L2" tech, who pretty quickly told me there was a serious problem "in your area" and "repairs were underway". Why didn't they say so in the first place??
This went on & on. Before long, I'd dug up info that this problem was HUGE & had been going on for a couple MONTHS, and affected a large part of the midwest!!

All they'd ever say is that "there is no problem", "repairs are in progress", "soon", or my favorite - "we don't gaurantee ANY minimum speed"

After three months of speeds ranging from 28 to 150kbps, I finally got them to cancel the contract - grudgingly.

Hope your experience is better!

feel fortunate to have that fast of DSL!

I have a client that has to deal with 192/192 IDSL at his office. It's kinda sorta slow

Me on the other hand... I have 1.5/768 with 2 static IPs. It's.... errrrrr.... blazin fast
