Another Bush lie

During a speech at a Nashville elementary school, he hailed his education record by noting that "the budget for next year boosts funding for elementary and secondary education to $53.1 billion. That's a 26-percent increase since I took office. In other words, we understand that resources need to flow to help solve the problems."

A few things were untrue in these remarks. Bush's proposed elementary and secondary education budget for next year is $34.9 billion, not $53.1 billion, according to his own Department of Education. It's his total proposed education budget that is $53.1 billion. More importantly, there is no next-year "boost" in this budget. Elementary and secondary education received $35.8 billion in 2003. Bush's 2004 budget cuts that back nearly a billion dollars, and the overall education spending in his budget is the same as the 2003 level.

Keep in mind that this was a prepared speech, not some off the cuff remark. So, it can't be attribute to a casual mistake. It's another attempt to deceive the American people.

Then he spooged on the teacher's blue dress and lied about it.

MTAtech needs to check the old mirror before accusing anyone of lying.

The money that impacts elementary and secondary education does not just come from the OESE (as any two-bit civics teacher could tell you). The money requested was actually an increase over FY03, although the amount appropriated was less than requested (which is typical).

Finally, the federal impact on local education budgets for a typical school district is very minor anyway (more for very poor districts).

But keep posting those catchy thread titles. Very few people know enough about how government works to know who's telling the truth and who's LYING, MTAtech!

I've always hated using "impact" as a verb. But, that's just me.

Assuming that's true (which I haven't verified) and the amount appropriated was less than requested, why is Bush saying there is a 26% increase? Shouldn't he be honest and say he asked for something the Republican controlled Congress wouldn't give him?

Everything is important , but the constitution does not mandate any federal role for education.

It's the old "important does not equal money and money does not equal important" rule that legislators forget.

Art is important, but please don't waste my hard earned wages on some stupid art project.

Instead of the word "Lie", which Bush sympathsizers seen to be sensitive to, perhaps we can say "Patently false"......
