Becoming The President
to become the president (of the USA) you need more than 4'000'000 $ to pay the advertising, the speeches in different states and all your employees, that's pretty much money!
so that means only rich people can be presidents?
is that fair?
Creatures
BTW: do not compare the USA to another country!

Who said $4million?
You get sponsors and crap, people donate money....you don't just say one day, "I want to be president of the United States"....gotta start small in politics, that's how you get your sponsors, etc. and make rich buddies over time. That's what I think anyway.

A person does not have to be rich. Most of our presidents have not been independently wealthy enough to fund their own campaigns. The party (Republican, Democrat, Libertarian etc) that they are working with and are represented by puts up the money. The money is raised with the express purpose of funding someone's campaign costs and it comes from corporations, private groups and individuals. This is not something done out of one man's pocket, by any means.
Anyone can be president, but as with all things it takes work. You can't just run (successfully...anyone can run) unless you have name recognition from something, whether it be politics, family or military.

Well, lets look at the Presidents from 1960:
JFK: Multi-Millionaire
LBJ: Multi-Millionaire
R. Nixon: ??
Jimmy Carter: ??
G. Ford: Multi-Millionaire
G.H.W. Bush : Multi-Millionaire
Bill Clinton: Now Multi-Millionaire
G.W. Bush: Multi-Millionaire
Ideally, a pauper can become a President.
But, ideally, there would be no poverty, war, guns......... |

There are some requirements, but you don't have to be rich. (Just have to have rich friends).
No matter what, most presidents will leave their presidency with very deep pockets. (Getting money one way or another. )

Does it really matter dave? Don't they leave office with a decent amount of money? Look at how much money Clinton and his wife are making.
For some reason I think Bush will be leaving office with some money as well. |

Um, it helps if they have a background in military, like Eisnehower for example. I forget if he was a 4 star or 5 star army general, but regardless he wasnt wealthy, just a powerful man who helped win WW2. As for Clinton, God knows how he got elected....

Mike,
The whole point of the thread is Creatures wants to know how people become president and wants to know if money is a prerequisite. Everyone who leaves the office leaves with a very hefty pension and lots of offers for speaking engagements. Clinton recently took in $1 mil for a single speech. The point of the thread though, is how they got there and the fact that even you, Mike, could be president if you have the ambition. |
