I think only two cat5s (three?) have made landfall at that strength on the US (Andrews doesn't count, was borderline and recognized as a cat 4 a max strength). Those would be Camile and the 1935 Keys storm. Isabel could add anopther notch to that list. Part of it's path projects it at florida, but the other at the Carolinas, which I am very worried about. Hugo was only a 4 and look how much damage it did.

I understand what you are saying..but every map I have seen today is a little different. Take a look at the map and service where I got it from says it is headed..if so, it will need to turn back southwest to get to you in Florida..the dang thing seems to be headed my way acording to this service.

I think they use darts to predict them. I honestly believe they only have any certainty about the next 12-24 hours.

Yes, you are 100% correct there..but..their computers are learning..each year, the long range predictions are better and getting closer to the correct track. Once the software gets enough weather patterns loaded, high and low pressure zones, and what moves them...those are what controls the direction of minor hurricanes..once one gets this big, it pretty well creates its own weather. If somebody saves these predictions daily as an image, and review them daily..you can see how good (or bad) the actual track vs predicted track is..5 years ago..they could not predict with any certainty where one would go 24 hours later hardly...they have come a long way.

...and let us not forget the 1900 Galveston hurricane... lost over 6000 lives!

...We have already been talking about preparedness (need batteries bad!) and about where to go and what to do with the dogs.

...We were under mandatory evacuation during Georges a few years back, it got too late to leave (no hotels avail up to TN.) and a row of 3 neighbors stayed. We are less than 1/2 mile from the northernmost line for evac. The storm surge thankfully came to about 1 mile south of us. It was a rainy day here in Louisiana! If anyone would like to listen to a great song, Marcia Ball, Louisiana 1927.

...Isabell is certainly a storm to keep an eye on, no pun intended!!!!
