Last night I was sitting in my car outside a library waiting for my wife. I heard someone talking behind me and looked in the mirror to see a college student walking by talking on a cell phone. As she passed the mirror's field of view, I saw another student further back, also talking on a cell phone. I looked ahead off to my left and there was yet another student talking on a cell phone. Just at that moment a fourth student, you guessed it, on a cell phone, came walking by. I started thinking about some of the huge changes in our lives over the last 25 years. The younger crowd here won't understand, but 25 years ago cell phones were someone's pipe dream, if that. Even 15 years ago mobile phones were carried in ungainly bags or mounted in a car.
25 years ago computers were things Capt. Kirk and Spock used on Star Trek. 25 years ago gas mileage was a primary concern of most drivers. 25 years ago CDs were the hot new theory we could only dream about. Most albums were on cassettes or vinyl LPs. 25 years ago terrorists were something for the British Isles and Middle East to worry about. 25 years ago the Soviets were the bads guys and our nuclear weapons made us feel safe. 25 years ago a hijacking meant a short diversion to Cuba. 25 years ago I was station just a few miles from the DMZ in Korea. I would get to talk to my parents once in a blue moon and then the line was scratchy and the time delay almost made it not worth the effort. Now my nephew in Afghanistan calls home via satellite phone or emails us a couple of times per month. 25 years ago the songs at the top of the charts actually had music in them!!
How times have changed.
