Can someone out there reccomend a good block knife set? Perferably for some semi-seroius cooking. I don't mind spending some money but would like to keep it under $200. I also think i prefer a combination of straight edge and serraded knives..

Anyway.. if there is any gormets out there hook me up with info on a good knife set

I can suggest a few things I prefer with professional experience behind me:
http://www.cutleryandmore.com is a GREAT place to shop---ive purchased 100's of dollars worth of knives from them...
I prefer Global knives although I have many Henckels as well, my g/f received the 5 piece Global set this year http://www.cutleryandmore.com/shop/details.asp?SKU=2250 with a couple extras blades I prefer, also a Boos block maple cutting board, I love the Boo's boards and use the 24X4 block---good stuff--- (get a good board as well I might add) http://www.cutleryandmore.com/shop/details.asp?SKU=1289 (they have many less expensive boards to offer) she got the 24X18 http://www.cutleryandmore.com/shop/details.asp?SKU=1268 ---Cutleryandmore offers a lifetime free sharpening service as well (I use a Lansky sharpener)...
Need some pans? The ones I use and love are made by All-Clad---the best available---fantastic quality!!!

The 3 piece "Chef's set" may be a good starter: http://www.cutleryandmore.com/shop/details.asp?SKU=1210

OH and my Xmas present? A new Kyocera ceramic bladed knife---BEAUTIFUL, and talk about HIGH tech?!

100% zirconium carbide baaaaby YEAH NOW!!!

J.A. Henckels makes AWESOME knives. I love knives, any kind. When I get my own place, I'm going to get one of their $300 sets.

German knives are generally well made.

I do not trust ANY Japanese knife yet. In my experience, any knife that is Asian made sucks.

When you get your knives don't put them in the dish washer. Ruins good knives.

I have CutCo knives and I don't think you can beat them for quality. You can certainly beat them for price. I don't think you can get a really complete set for under $1200~1600.

hehe I'm probably somewhat wrong with that, at least with kitchen knives, but in my experience with "regular" knives, USA and European (Swiss, German) knives are wonderful. Also, while on the subject, homemade knives are generally quite good, although they may come from a junk Chevy or something. I have a Brazilian 10" light brush slicer and Pakistani pig sticker

Serrated knives are good for everything but raw meats IMO. Try fileting a flank steak or skirt steak raw with a serrated knife and it just gums up with fat. Makes me mad. lol

I'm gonna go with a set of straight Henckels next.
